A show's first official bow on Broadway is always a major event, but when you've got big-time names like rapper and mogul Jay-Z, director Spike Lee and Oprah bestie Gayle King walking the red carpet alongside music icons like Lou Reed, Questlove and David Byrne, it should go without saying that you're dealing with an exciting opening night. New musical Fela! enjoyed such an opening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on November 23, with a bevy of supporters descending on 49th Street to see what the hot off-Broadway to Broadway transfer had to offer. Created, directed and choreographed by Tony-winning dance legend Bill T. Jones, the exuberant production, which shares the life of Afrobeat pioneer and Nigerian activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti through a vivacious combination of live music and choreography, the show was even blessed by members of the real Kuti's family, who came out at curtain call to celebrate with the cast. Following the emotional bows, Fela! and its entourage made their way downtown to Gotham Hall for an after-party as lively as the show.
